Stay & Explore
Suffolk is a beautiful place though, if you ask the Bride, Norfolk is by far the superior county.

Butley Priory is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, with country and sea-side just beyond the door. Our recommendations for extending your trip to take some time in this wonderful part of the world are below.

P.S. don't forget to explore the venue itself, a little bit of the storied history of the Priory is linked at the bottom of this page.

Exploring Beyond Butley
Our favourite things to do in the local area can be found below.

Snape Maltings
Home to independent shops, galleries, a restaurant, a separate café and performance spaces with links to Benjamin Britten.
Rory & Helen often visit on their way back from the Priory.

Sutton Hoo
A favourite venue for school trips when the Bride was young. Worth a visit to learn about this Anglo-Saxon site and the famous unearthing of it's buried secrets. Maintained by The National Trust.

Orford Ness
Another sightseeing site with a secret past. Helen, her Mum & her sister enjoyed visiting in recent years. Hop on the ferry from Orford to discover the hush-hush military history of this sleepy section of the Suffolk coast.

The Oyster Inn
A country pub just down the road in the village of Butley. The inn has served locals for 400 years. The pub's motto? You're a stranger here, but only once. Rory will meet you at the bar.

Pump Street Bakery
Favoured by various London establishments (de Beauvoir deli, we see you), Pump Street Bakery is well-known for 10/10 chocolate. A great pit stop.

Two Magpies Cafe
A little further afield, but worth the trip if you're staying Aldeburgh way. Serves lovely breakfasts and lunches - the sandwiches are Jacob Wood approved!
About the Priory
The gatehouse we'll be getting married in is the last complete building of the Augustinian Priory founded on the site in 1171.
If you explore beyond the gatehouse the ruins of the former priory, which covered 20 acres in its hey-day, can still be seen.
Kings, Queens and even the Arctic Monkeys have visited the venue - so we'll be following in some very special footsteps this summer.
